This course is intended to assist participants to prepare for the Institution of Structural Engineers Chartered Membership Examination (CME), in accordance with the Institution’s guidelines.
By the end of the course, the participants should be able to: (i) describe the general principles and techniques to successfully complete the examination; (ii) demonstrate these principles by discussing real questions on different types of structures; (iii) judge the requirements of the examination and what the examiners expect to see.
The course will be conducted by three current marking examiners for the IStructE CME over two sessions:

· Structural design of principal elements – Section 2c
· Structural drawings – Section 2d
· Construction issues – Section 2e
· Answering a question – Critique of previous attempt at answering a question
· Structural scheming – Practical examples of conceptual design
· Preparation for the examination – Activities leading up to the examination

· Examiner’s point of view – What examiners look for and common pitfalls
· Past examination questions – Talk through a number of other past examination questions and sample solutions
· Mock examination / workshop – Attempt parts of past examination questions, followed by discussion on the solutions
