• Student-Athlete Code of Conduct

  • St. Finn Barr Athletics coordinators, board and coaches believe that athletes who choose to participate in the athletics program are given a privilege of membership on teams and should conduct themselves as responsible representatives of the school. In order to assure this conduct, the Sports Board and Coaches enforce a Code of Conduct in addition to the expectations outlined for all student-athletes in the Sports Handbook.

Furthermore, members of teams who fail to abide by the Code of Conduct are subject to disciplinary actions. Members of teams and organizations must always serve as models of high moral character and must demonstrate appropriate sport commitment, which is expected from all athletes. As recognized representatives of the athletics program, members are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior during the season (activity) or out of season; in the uniforms, on/off gym premises.

  • Section A - Coach/Athlete Responsibility

    1. Each coach has the prerogative to establish additional rules pertaining to the activity supervised. These rules may include attendance at practices, games, etc. Rules set by the individual coach must be in writing and approved by the Director of Athletics.
    2. Athletes are expected to attend all practices (and arrive on time) unless they present a valid excuse to the coach.
    3. Absentees - If a student has 2 or more unexcused absences in a given period, they will forfeit the opportunity to participate/play in one game. Continued tardiness and/or absences from practice may result in suspension from the team.
    4. Athletes suspended from the team will not be allowed to participate in activities or athletics while they are on suspension.
    5. Athletes participating on teams are expected to be representative of the school and ambassadors of goodwill/good sportsmanship at all times. Athletes will not display any rude, insubordinate, or disrespectful behavior towards any adult (i.e. parents, game officials, coaches, other players, etc.).
    6. Quitting a Team - If you quit a team after joining it, you will be ineligible to participate in the athletics program for the remainder of the year. Any athlete who violates the guidelines and/or does not satisfactorily complete the season or activity may not be eligible for any award or recognition given for participation in the activity.

  • Section B - Suspension Procedures

An athlete may be suspended from participation in any sports activity according to the following procedure:

    1. All reports of major violations of the Code of Conduct and/or the Athletics Handbook are to be made to the Athletic Director in writing.
    2. The Athletic Director will contact the athlete, parent/guardian, and the coach to inform them of the violation and the procedures to be followed. If requested, a meeting will be scheduled within 3 days. This meeting will include the Athletic Director, the student-athlete, his/her parent(s)/guardian, his/her coach(es), and a member of the Sports Board.
    3. The Athletic Director and the School Principal will determine the course of action. The student-athlete and his/her parent(s)/guardian will be notified of the decision immediately.

  • Section C - Right of Appeal

A student-athlete and his/her parent(s)/guardian may appeal a decision by writing a letter to the Athletic Director with copies to the School Principal within 3 days following receipt of the decision. The letter should request a hearing with the Athletic Director and the School Principal. Within 5 days after the letter is received, the Athletic Director will notify the parent(s)/guardian and the student-athlete of the time and place of the appeal hearing. The Athletic Director and the School Principal will hear both sides of the case and will take action which they consider to be in the best interest of the student-athlete and the school. During the time between the original decision and hearing, the student-athlete will be ineligible to participate in any athletics activities.
