• SACRED HEART PARISH SCHOOL

    Technology Use Agreement 2021-2022
  • For the school year of 2021-2022, Sacred Heart Parish School will provide an iPad, case, and charging access to all students TK-8. These iPads will remain at the school for students in PS - 5th grade and be taken home to utilize for homework and at-home learning for grades 6-8. Students should maintain care of their iPad and use it for the purpose of education.

The focus of the iPad program at Sacred Heart Parish School is to provide tools and resources to our 21st-century learners. The use of the school’s technology resources is a privilege, not a right. The privilege of using the technology resources provided by Sacred Heart Parish School is not transferable or extendible by students to people or groups outside the school and terminates when a student is no longer enrolled at Sacred Heart.

  • DEVICES

This use policy applies to all SHPS issued devices used by students participating in the take-home device program. SHPS retains sole right of possession to the iPad and other related equipment. The devices will be issued to students according to need and the guidelines set forth in this document. The school’s technology or administrative staff retains the right to collect and/or inspect the device at any time.

  • Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

    • Talk to your children about values and the standards that your children should follow on the use of the internet.
    • In order for our 1:1 program to be a success, parental involvement and oversight is necessary to ensure appropriate usage of the device outside of school.
    • Parents are expected to monitor student activity at home

    School Responsibilities

    • Provide internet and Email access to its students.
      • Filtering:  The internet is intended to provide a wide range of information in a trusting environment. Sacred Heart believes that appropriate use of the internet is best achieved through a communal effort involving teachers, parents and students. To this end, the school has taken steps to restrict student access to known objectionable sites. However, it is impossible to control all materials on a global network, and the school cannot reasonably prevent all inappropriate uses. High standards of conduct are necessary and expected on the part of the student. Sacred Heart is not responsible for the accuracy or quality of information that students obtain through the internet. Filters on home networks are not likely to be as comprehensive as the school’s system. Grades 6-8 will take home their iPad for educational purposes.  The iPads for all other grades will remain at the school for use in the classroom.

    Student Responsibilities

    • Using iPads in a responsible and ethical manner.

A mandatory iPad Orientation will take place during the first week of the school year for grades 6-8.  Teachers and the technology coordinator will review the Ipad policy in the other grades with the students.

    • Your iPad should remain in the case provided by the school
    • Keep your iPad away from food, drink, water and other liquids

Students and their parents/guardians will be charged the entire cost of the device for lost or damaged iPads that cannot be repaired.  The cost must be paid before the repaired iPad is returned to the student.

    Using Your iPad at School:

iPads left at home (grades 6-8): If students leave their iPad at home, they are responsible for getting the course work completed as if they had their iPad present. If a student repeatedly leaves their iPad at home, they will be subject to disciplinary action.

iPads in for repair: Students may be issued “loaner” iPads when their assigned iPad is undergoing repairs if a “loaner” iPad is available.

Charging (grades 6-8): iPads must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition. Students need to charge their iPads each evening. Repeat violations of this policy will result in disciplinary action. Student is still responsible for completing the class work even if their iPad is not charged.  Students can bring their own personal external battery to use at the school.

Backups: Students may save work directly to the iPad. It is recommended students use their Google Drive account for their file storage. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion.

Apple ID (grades 6-8): An Apple ID is a username for all things Apple. This ID will allow the school to push out iPad apps to student devices.  It is the student’s responsibility to remember their assigned Apple ID and password.

Passwords: Students have the option of password protecting their iPad.  Classes that use Google Classroom will be required to use a passcode on their iPad for the software to work.. Students are prohibited from sharing this password with anyone else except their parents and teachers. Students are responsible for knowing all passwords associated with their iPads.  If a passcode is forgotten, please contact the technology coordinator (Mrs. Berstein) to reset the passcode before the iPad is locked out.

Usage before and after school on school grounds: Usage at these times is permitted for educational purposes only and with permission from the extended-care supervisor.

Email (grades 6-8): The school will be providing a “sacredheartscool.org” email account for each student. These email accounts are provided as a means for communicating with teachers and peers and are for educational use only. We encourage parents to talk to students about email and retain the student’s password. Students are prohibited from setting up additional email accounts on the iPads. Grades 2-5 will have an email assigned to them that is not active to send emails.  Its sole use is to log into accounts on the iPad.

●Email Passwords: Sacred Heart will provide a password to each student for his/her email account.

    ● Monitoring: Student email is monitored.

    Other Student Technology Use

The use of campus technology is intended to promote greater academic collaboration and communication among the Sacred Heart Parish School  community.  Violation of the Student Technology Use Agreement will result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

    Specific Rules and Policies:

    When using computers:

    1. Tampering with computers or peripheral devices is defined as destruction of school property and will be deemed grounds for disciplinary action.
    2. Software is not to be copied to or from any school computer, unless a faculty or staff member has given prior consent. Most software is copyrighted, and unauthorized duplication is illegal.
    3. Ignorance is not an acceptable excuse for the misuse of hardware or software. When in doubt, seek assistance.
    4. School computers must be used for school related purposes only.  Social networking, video sites, and other non-academic uses are prohibited at all times.

    When using the Internet:

    1. Material that can be defined as obscene or vulgar should not be accessed, downloaded, printed, or viewed intentionally. Students who are found in violation of appropriate use of the Internet (either  through viewing inappropriate material, watching movies, or playing games on campus computers) will be subject to disciplinary action.
    2. Respect and observe copyright laws.
    3. The school reserves the right to impose consequences for inappropriate use. Inappropriate use includes, but is not limited to, harassment, use of the school name, remarks directed to or about teachers, administrators, and/or students, offensive communications and safety threats made on any Internet sites (examples: Social Networking websites, blogs, Journaling websites)

When using Sacred Heart Parish School email accounts (Available for grades 6-8 only):

Email accounts are intended to facilitate communication within the school community. Students should bear in mind that e-mail is not necessarily private, and may be subject to review and supervision. Students also must bear in mind that when using a Sacred Heart Parish School email account, they need to maintain the same level of respect that they would associate with communication in a classroom setting. Inappropriate behavior might include, but is not limited to, making any statements that are explicitly or implicitly threatening, demeaning, or intolerant.

Students are required to check their email accounts daily as teachers may elect to communicate with their students via e-mail on a regular basis. Students should not sign up for non-school related distribution lists or services, as this leads to an excess of SPAM (unwanted) email messages.

  • INTERNET USE

    • Students will use their internet and network access privileges only for activities in support of education and research consistent with the educational objectives of Sacred Heart Parish School (SHH).
    • The SHH internet and devices may be used only for school activities. Academic honesty requires proper citation of all sources (see Plagiarism Contract). Users are expected to abide by the Sacred Heart Parish  Honor Code and internet network and interpersonal etiquette guidelines. Vulgarities, abusive language, or threatening actions is strictly prohibited.
    • SHPS utilizes web filtering software as a precaution against inappropriate materials.  Nevertheless, with the ever-changing internet, countless new applications, extensions, and websites are added each day, so gaps in filtering can occur.  Students must immediately notify an adult supervisor if inappropriate web pages are inadvertently accessed. Students may not share the website with other student users. Students shall not deliberately attempt to access inappropriate materials. Users shall not reveal online their home addresses, phone numbers, or any other personal information.
    • Dishonesty and vandalism will result in immediate suspension of technology privileges (and other disciplinary actions). These acts include (but are not limited to) any attempt to steal, harm, or destroy the data of another user, making equipment or software alterations, network hacking, and uploading or creating computer viruses. No unauthorized software may be loaded onto school computers. Students may not create or access personal web pages without the permission of a teacher. Students may not download or otherwise access any files, applications, or extensions (i.e., music files) without the permission of a teacher. Students’ work will be published only under the direction of a teacher.
    • Students may not place stickers or other markings on their devices without school permission.
    • Students may not change their passwords without permission from a teacher or school administrator. If security is breached, students will ask a teacher for assistance in changing the password.
  • GOOGLE ACCOUNTS

    • Students are given credentials to access Google accounts, hosted by Google “G Suite for Education.” Sacred Heart Parish School (SHH) provided e-mail accounts can only be used for sending messages to others with "sacredheartschool.net/" accounts. Included in student Google accounts is access to cloud-based storage and Google applications. These resources are intended to facilitate student learning and should not be used for inappropriate purposes.
    • Students have no expectation of privacy when using SHH technology (including e-mail and file storage). Files on student devices will be periodically examined to ensure compliance with this Technology Use Agreement. Use of the school internet account and local area network is prohibited by persons who are not SHH staff, faculty, administration, students, or parents, as authorized by the principal. Transmission of  advertising, commercial material, or political lobbying on SHH technology is prohibited.
    • Students are only granted access to school e-mail accounts on school property including the school location, network, and devices; personal accounts may be accessed only under the direct supervision of a teacher when necessary as part of the educational process.
