Intercultural Understanding Short Answer Questions
Intercultural Understanding Short Answer Questions (4 questions - answers 1~2 paragraphs each)
The programs offered by the Institute of South East Asian Affairs (ISEAA) present many challenges to Western students. In order to complete your application, you need to answer the following questions aimed at gauging your "intercultural understanding." Please upload your answers as either a WORD or PDF file in the "File" tab below.
1.) Thailand is a Newly Industrialized Country (NIC). Modern conveniences such as mobile phones and large shopping malls abound, but to maximize your Thai experience, you'll have to adjust your thinking about how things "should be" and avoid operating under a "first-world mentality" while here. Coming from a "developed" country, what do you expect your greatest challenge to be in Thailand, and how will you try to overcome it?
2.) What are your expectations of living and studying in a developing country like Thailand? What final goal(s) do you hope to come away with after completing the study abroad experience in Thailand?
3.) Please describe a challenging intercultural interaction you have experienced and explain how you dealt with the situation. What did you learn? How can you use that experience to contribute to your learning on the ISEAA Program?
4.) Thailand is often seen as an "exotic paradise"; an indulgent, sensual, and underdeveloped tropical tourist playground for foreigners. In Thailand you may have easy access to many freedoms (including sexual) you didn't have before, and will probably get a lot of attention from Thais in a way very different from "at home." How do you expect to navigate your new-found "fame" and freedom while behaving respectfully towards Thai culture and in an overall appropriate manner?
